Gender Roles

I would like to share this video as entitled by my blog post today. As what is in the description of the video, "the kind of stereotypes that society use to define what is a man and what is a woman and thedifference between them."

Funny indeed because it reflects some situations that are akin to ours. Like the scenario when a man buys something in a boutique, he directly get it. On the other hand, when a woman buys something, she looks for other things before and after getting it.  It is one of those classic examples of stereotype and difference between a man and a woman. I think, yes, there are some points that are true about those stereotypes and they are commonly seen in between genders. However, it doesn't apply to all people because each person are different e.g. likes, taste and attitudes. Unique, shall we say?

Gangnam Style

Move on, Dougie and Call Me Maybe! K-pop is invading the world by surprise - Gangnam Style. This is a single from the Korean rapper PSY that was released two months ago. Ever since then, the song has caught the attention of many because of its catchy rhythm, the humor and the choreography. The viral video on Youtube has now 127 million hits, faster than Justin Bieber's "Baby" and Rebecca Black's "Friday".

The song is about PSY describing the kind of a perfect girl friend: who knows when to refined and at the same, knows when to get wild.

What is Oppa Gangnam? Oppa is a Korean equivalent for big brother. Female siblings and girl friends usually call this to their big brother or boy friend. On the other hand, Gangnam is an affluent district in Seoul. So, it translates that "your big brother [is] Gangnam Style"

The music video is the additional factor for this single. The music video took its viewers to the different sites in the Gangnam district such as the yoga club and bathhouse. There are also cameos made by some celebrities. The most eye-catching is the 5-year old boy who dances in front of PSY. Some funny scenes and "special effects" with flashy costumes and killer dance moves wraps all of them up.

However, according to some reports the song doesn't entirely more about PSY or the perfect girl friend, but it also acts as a social commentary. As parodied by the music video, it comments about Korean materialism such as Spending too much money and shiny cars. The song pokes fun about spending a lot of money to try to appear rich to fit in to other people and to gain social status.

So much of that, the world is captivated to Gangnam Style. Celebrities such as Katy Perry has posted their admiration with the song. There are several parodies and reaction videos circulating in Youtube. The song also entered in current music charts like Gaon Digital Singles US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles. Recently, PSY has appeared on 2012 MTV Music Video Awards and performed his dance craze with Kevin Hart, the show's emcee while he introduces the next presenters. Psy has signed with Schoolboy Records, the same recording label of Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen.
